I so enjoyed my trip to Victors last night that it's inspired me to write my second post in a fortnight! I think that's probably high enough praise in itself - but read on for the ins and outs!
Doing dry January? There are four mocktails on offer which are – finally!!! Finally!!! – much more than the usual insipid offerings. In case my Instagram hasn’t clued you in I’m a firm tipple-lover, but I’m indignant on my teetotal pals’ behalf when mocktails are pitched as “a fun alternative for the kids” – and more often than not they’re not fun at all, they’re just a few different fruit juices thrown into a glass with a bit of fizzy water and given horribly gimmicky, alliterative names. Mango Magic. Strawberry Sparkler. Banana Bonanza. Victor’s, on the other hand, offers mocktails that don’t feel like a poor alternative: Eternal Autumn had a pleasant punch of blood orange and was pretty enough to nab a feature on my Instagram story
There was popcorn chicken; beef and Emmental sliders; mushroom and truffle croquettes; mini lobster rolls with aioli; and, just for the sake of trying something from every section of the menu, salmon sashimi (a very pretty dish served in bamboo on crushed ice but due to my own shaky definitions of sushi and sashimi I didn’t expect it to be just salmon – tasty, of course, but do bear in mind if you’re after something more filling). The puddings had a lot to live up to but our double-whammy of raspberry cheesecake and chocolate fondant was up to the task. What might sound like relatively tame puds were jazzed up with poached kumquats and raspberry pearls – the chocolate fondant in particular was the stuff of slow-motion soft-focus videos.
